LOS ANGELES _ The Los Angeles Police Department is testing two types of electric motorcycles as part of an effort to increase efficiency, decrease its carbon footprint and ultimately cut costs.
Such bikes are already used by a growing number of police departments across the country and around the world, including in Bogota, Colombia; Hong Kong, and closer to home, multiple agencies in California as well as in New York, North Carolina and Oregon.
Its a different, somewhat sleeker look than their traditionally burlier gas-powered BMW and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Sgt. Dan Gomez says the department is looking at using them for foot beats and specialized events in the future.
The department is also studying how its limited range of fewer than 130 miles on one charge will affect policing.
